Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

Lessor Breaking Apmnt Lease with Lessee

Hello,

My fiance currently lives in an apartment complex that has recently been purchased twice as an investment property. The newest owner is remodeling each unit in order to sell them as condos. He is currently in a one-year lease until June. The current/new owner gave all the month-to-month lessees 30-day to move out. They owner is in the process of trying to 'compensate' my fiance to get him to leave. Does he have to accept and let the owner break the lease before the lease period expires? Also, what kind of compensation can we ask for from the owner. We are getting married in 3 months and do not want to move 3 times (him twice, me once) before we get to our final place to live. Do you suggest we get a lawyer? What rights and leverage do we have?

Thanks,

Jennifer

You don't have much to work with. Take what they have to offer and put it in the bank. It looks like he only has 2-3 months under the lease. If he doesn't take the offer, they will give him notice that the lease won't be renewed and he will have to move or be evicted. The benefit of hiring the attorney wouldn't offset the cost.
