Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

We have lived in the same home for over 15 years, and will all of the record flooding in S Texas through the years, we have never had a bit of rain in our house. This weekend it rained heavily and we had three rooms flood. The only difference is there have bee three businesses built behind us. The city of Live Oak says that we need to create a backyard where the water can flow more appropriately, and said this would cost us about $3,000. They claim no responsibility even though the businesses are in Live Oak, they gave the permits and did the inspections of these three places. I know that the building has caused my flooding and want to know what I can do about it. My neighbors home was flooded as well.

You should call a real estate attorney. If businesses caused the flooding, you may have recourse against them.

There's a statute that addresses this issue; you may be able to require those whose building caused the natual flow of surface waters to change to fix the problem.
