Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

Paying fees to Apartment Leasing firm upon moveout

My question is, can this company legally charge us for replacing the carpet if it was not ruined? What can we do to look into this further since they are trying to put this on our credit report? This is the first time my son/I had lived in an apartment complex. We moved out and they kept the downpayment fees to repaint the walls within the apartment back white. They charged us fees for cleanup & they charged us to replace a carpet. Although we cleaned up the apartment before moving out, we would be willing to pay for the cleaning fees but what we wont pay for is to replace the carpet because the carpet was not ruined. We were shocked when they sent us a bill asking us to replace it. We think they are taking advantage of us in this situation. I gave them my forwarding address in good faith and trust me if we felt we had done damage to the apartment, I wouldn't have given them my new address. What can we do or who can we contact to fight this injustice?
