Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

Re: Personal Property Tax, Harris County , Texas

I sold my business Feb 29, 2008 and filed a appeal with the Harris County Tax Appraisal Board to request a reduction on our personal property tax. I requested for the Appraisal District to prorate my taxes due to the sale of the company 2 months into 2008. I was told the value of the personal property as of Jan 1, 2008 is what the taxes are based on and by law the taxes can not be prorated or negotiated. Was told even if I sold the business on Jan 2, 2008 the same would apply. This seems unfair based on logic but was told their decission stands. My question: Is this truley a law or just a policy with the Harris County District.

That is the law. Did your lawyer not provide in the contract to sell your business that taxes were to be pro-rated between buyer and seller? Oh, you didn't have a lawyer. Penny wise, pound foolish.
