Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

can a previous landlord sue for rent owed without a signed contract. property is now owned by someone else to which we pay rent to currently. previous contract expired we stayed in home 3 months after contract end date paying only 1 of the 3 months rent before property changed owners.
