property and school taxes

are we responsible for the school taxes for 2004 and 2005 that were not paid, we bought the property in October 2005

Re: property and school taxes

The deed you acquired the property by likely says you assumed the 2005 taxes. Check and see. Did you close through a title company? If so, they would have made sure the 2004 taxes were paid. Even though you don't have personal liability for either tax year -- the person who owned the land on on January 1 of the year does -- the taxes encumber the land and you will lose it if they are not paid.
