Typically, you exchange the release of lien document at the same time payment is received. Once they've signed the ROL, you file it in the county clerk's office.

Your lender is required by law to provide you with a release of lien once payoff is received. If lender is a novice or individual, you can get a release from an attorney or title company to present your lender for signature before a notary. The release will then need to be filed in the office of your county clerk.
