Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas
What rights do I have?
I have violated my lease by having too many occupants, so the landlord decided to raise my rent $1200 per month instead of $600 per month. The lease says that she can not raise my rent, so I asked her if we could give 30 days notice and move. She said that we could, and she would give us our security deposit back. But then she also wants us to continue to pay the rent up to the end of the lease. Can she do that or what all can she do? Also what can I do? Thanks.

Re: What rights do I have?
If you breached a written lease, then the landlord can exercise its available remedies which would usually be terminating the lease. Generally, the landlord cannot unilaterally raise the rent due to a tenant's violation of the lease.
