Disability compensation and Social Security
My husband has become disabled recently ,and we have applied for benefits. What are our chances of being approved and how long does it take?

You didn't say how old your father was at the time he becam disabled. this will figure into the mix. Also, what are his "impairements", what type of jobs has he held and for how long. Ther eare too many questions unanswered to even begin to give you a meaningful answer. But, generally he has a sless than 50/50 chance of being approved on the initial application. If turned down, immediatley ask for and apply for a reconsideration. Then get you a lawyer if your father is not approved on the reconsideration stage. You should not be charged any money up front, except for expenses to take your father's case. Only if approved for benefits should your father have to pay a fee. Generally from initial application to first denial is about 4-6 months. Then 6 months on reconsideration. After that about 12 months to an Administrative hearing.
