Legal Question in Social Security Law in Texas
Social Security Benefits changing
My husband has a stepson from a previous marriage, who is still a very big part of our lives. My question is, he lives with his mother and they receive social security benefits (his real father died several years ago) if he legally changes his last name to that of my husbands will it affect his social security benefits?
Thank You

Re: Social Security Benefits changing
A change of name should not affect the child's Social Security benefits, but an adoption would, or the assumption of support responsibilities by your husband. But I would suggest that you double check with your local SSA office to be sure that there would be no problem.
