Legal Question in Traffic Law in Texas
Accused of speeding ''paced'' 80 when cruise was on 70
I was ''paced'' going 80mph in a 70mph zone by a state trooper (who I knew was following me... for at least 15 miles) near Corsicana, Tx. My cruise control was set to 70mph, and I had a passenger who can witness my speed. I have not had a speeding ticket in 4-5 years. My vehicle is a '02 with 20k miles, I am 100% positive that my speedometer is functioning properly.
I have contacted 4 attorneys, all of which offered to help me get the offense deferred. My problem is that this is an admission to guilt, and the court will still get my money.
I would like to plea not guilty. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your factual account supports a 'not guilty' plea in this case. The attorneys you contacted were probably trying to be practical for your benefit.
A plea of not guilty will take you to trial. Although preparation for and trying a municipal case does not rise to the level of a felony, it still requires preparation and attendance at trial. Attorneys charge for their expertise, their time and their skill. I would expect a Corsicana attorney to accept your case to go to trial, but would likely require a retainer of around $3000 against a $200 hourly rate. You would also have to be present for the hearings set by the court, as well as the trial. And to top it off, you may lose.
It seems unfair, but your 'day in court' is your only real alternative if you reject deferred.
You can always represent yourself. Having watched people do this, would suggest that it usually does not go well for the defendant.
