In a criminal case, it is a finding by the judge that there is sufficient evidence to find the person guilty, but does not find the person guilty. Instead the defendant is ordered to perform community supervision, including fines, court costs, classes etc. If successfully completed, then the matter is dismissed. (the arrest record is not expunged, but there is no conviction). Under certain circumstances the record can be sealed.
If the person violates the probation, then he/she is subject to the entire range of punishment of the original charge.
