Legal Question in Traffic Law in Texas

They have a law in Texas that assesses a surcharge for traffic violations, that if goes unpaid, results in the suspension of license. Yesterday I got pulled over for no front license plate when the police officer told me I had a suspended license. This was news to me. He couldn't tell me why it was suspended but gave me a ticket for it anyway. It turns out I had been assigned this surcharge, and because I have moved several times in the past several years, I never received the notice. I immediately paid the surcharge, and my license is active. But now that I have a ticket for driving with a suspended license, if I pay it, my license will be suspended for another year. I wont have anyway to get to grad school or go to work. What do I do?

Don't pay the ticket; fight the ticket. Demand a jury trial.

When you go to trial, tell your story to the jury, and ask THEM what kind of punishment they think is appropriate.
