No but it can save a lot of problems if you do have one.

No, but it is not really the best way of doing it. There are certain legal formalities that have to go into the making and executing of a will and if those aren't followed then you suffer the difficult problems later on when the will is submitted for probate. An once of prevention now will save many pounds of grief in the future.
