Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

I was contacted by the widow of a friend of mine that passed away about a month ago. She advised me that myself and another guy were co executors of his estate. First, what are the duties here in Texas? Second, I wonder why his wife is not the executor?

the three of you would be wise to get together..what assets are to be probated? the wife may know why she is not named..other wives/childrens property etc...but it will cost money for fees and attorneys...
