Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

Do I need to hire a lawyer to transfer ownership of my parents home to myself? This is a mutual decision. What are the proper steps to take.

I don't have enough information to answer this. I need to know the following:

1. Is the house financed?

2. Are your parents alive?

3. How did they acquire the house?

4. Is the title clear?

5. Are you paying anything for the house?

In most cases, an attorney can handle the transfer of an interest in real estate for a few hundred dollars. Given the value of the real estate, it's usually imprudent to try to do it yourself.

More importantly, you need a CPA. You may be losing valuable tax benefits if you transfer an asset before the death of a parent. You also may lose potential Medicaid benefits that your parents may be entitled to.
