Leaving a house to a son

My mother wants to avoid the expense of a will but wants to make sure her house is left to her son when she dies. Does she need a will or are there other alternatives?

Besides the house, there is probably other property of various types that your mother owns that would be subject to state laws of decent if there is no will. A will is probably the cheapest way to ensure that one's wishes are completed.
