Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

Which papers to file?

My father in law passed away last January with no will. The only thing he had was a bank account with about $6000 in it. He was not married, my husband and his sister were his only two children. I'm confused about the paperwork we need to file. Small estate affidavit, affidavit of heirship, or something else I haven't heard about? Sister is in CA, will that matter at all? Thank you for your time,--name removed--

Re: Which papers to file?

Without knowing more of the details, particularly any debts outstanding, the small estate affidavit appears to be the way to go.
