Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

property information

my father died back in january, my sister and I were just notified in august. we did not have any contact with my dad for most of our lives, we know very little about him. He owned a home in texas and we have the address, but that is all. How does one go about obtaining info on someone that has died. we do not have a soc. sec. number so we are pretty limited. Is it possible to request info on the property from a state source?

Re: property information

Tax Assessors have websites and you might look there for information. It would help if you stated what city/zipcode.

Re: property information

The tax assessors for each county in Texas usually have a website that contains property information. Some of the county clerks have their real property records indices on websites.

If you need further information, you might consider engaging a private investigator.

Re: property information

If you are able to find any information from the Tax Appraisal District or the County Clerk regarding your father's property, you may also want to contact the Probate Clerk in his county to see if a will has been filed for probate. If no will has been filed and he died intestate (without a will) you may be entitled to a share of his property. My condolences on your loss.
