Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

Out of U.S.--Collecting Inheritance

I am out of the country and have learned that I have an inheritance of a little less than $10,000.

An ''executor'' whom I have never met tells me that I must

physically show up to collect the inheritance.

Question: Why would one ''have to'' physically show up and bring I.D. to collect?

Couldn't this be done electronically somehow?

I would like to know the ''conditions'' on which a physical appearance (me flying back to the states) would be mandatory.

Re: Out of U.S.--Collecting Inheritance

There should be some other way of proving who you are, and that you are actually the devisee entitled to the inheritance.

Ask the executor if an affidavit prepared before a consular official plus a photo of your passport would be sufficient.

The executor is probably exercising an excess of caution, since the executor would be reponsible to the estate if the $10,000 was paid to the wrong person.
