When a will states that the whole estate is left to two daughters for them to share and share alike and one of the daughters dies, what happens to that part of the estate?

The will should have a definition in it to tell what happens in the event that a beneficiary predeceases. Also, you don't mention when the daughter died? Before Mom? Or after Mom, but before probate? Finally, you should check the will for a "residue" clause, as that may control.
