Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

Why do wills typically instruct the executor to pay off bills? I would prefer all the money go to wife.

Excellent question... along long time ago, somebody started putting a payment of debts clause in wills and it became a standard. I routinely leave that clause out of wills. If whoever is drafting your will won't, find another lawyer. You do need to understand that even if the clause is not present in the will, a survivor may be responsible for all or a portion of such debt depending on the circumstances.
