Contract Terms

I have currently been working for the same company for 8 years, but am now considerin leaving. In my contract it states that if I hand in my notice I will need to work 1 week for each year of employment, so 8 weeks. However the company was bought over 4 years ago and I never signed a contract until 2 years ago. My contract does however state that my employment commenced 8 years ago. I was wondering if the company ownership changing hands, or the signing of my first contract, could instead be taken as the start of my employment, or if I would have to work the full 8 weeks notice. Any advice you could give me would be greatly apriciated.

I am afraid that under your contract of employment you will be required to give eight weeks notice. It is quite irrelevant that your original employers were taken over and the original contract of employment is binding upon both you and your new employers.
