Legal Question in Business Law in United Kingdom
We recently bought a cafe/cafe business and paid 50,000 for good will. The previous owner has set up doing the same again 1/2 mile from us. The solicitor that drew up our contract in which we understand it was agreed he would not set up within 20 miles of us has told us he wants 20,000 "up front" to fight our case. We paid 2000 for the contract to be drawn and we can't understand why nothing can be done.

On these facts and if the sale contract was properly drawn there is no case to fight. All that would be needed is a simple application for a court injunction to prevent the cafe owner trading in breach of his covenants. This neeed not be expensive and the costs would almost certainly be recoverable.
There are other concerns as the legal fees you have been charged-and certainly quoted-seem excessive.
