Re: working notice dispute
hi. the notice you must give will depend upon your contract of employment, or if no notice period is given the statutory minimum which in all probability is one week.
if you are in breach of a term in your employment contract by not giving sufficient notice you are in theory liable to the employers for any loss which they may suffer. In most circumstances there may be inconvenience to them but not monetary loss which could form the basis of a claim.
Their threat to withhold a reference is worrying. They are under no legal obligation to provide a reference and if they will not do so, there is little you can do about it.
I hope that this is helpful.
