Legal Question in Family Law in United Kingdom

i have separated from my partner, we have a child together, she is now 3 years old. we were never married but her birth certificate has his surname on it and i want her to be known as my surname. How can i do this? Do I need his permission? Can i add my surname to hyphenate hers? I appreciate your help as i am a single mother and i dont feel its fair my daughter having a different name to me, especially when collecting her from per school etc., Thank you

It would seem certain that your daughter's father has parental responsibility and as a consequence you will need to either obtain his written permission or leave of the court if you wish to change her surname.
