i recieved an e-mail stating that i have won there lottery.it stated that i had won over 900,000.00 in u.s. dollars.how can i protect myself and receive my winnings?

First start with the basic question: did you buy a ticket in the "international lottery?" If not, just stop there as it is clearly a fraud -- there is no organization in the world that gives lottery winnings to people who don't buy tickets!

Don't let greed overcome your common sense. This is a fraud from the outset unless you bought a ticket. The definition of a lottery is that prizes are awarded out of the proceeds of ticket sales -- this does not claim to be a sweepstakes, which is just a form of advertising.

What you have described is almost certainly a form of a scheme to defraud known as a 419 Nigerian scam. (419 apparently refers to a section of the Nigerian criminal code. I myself continue to receive these bogus notices of so-called "lottery winnings")
