My dad is a british citizen and has bought a bar in koh samui in his thai wifes name. His family have moved in and taken over and are taking all the profit. Does he have any legal protection?

Yes, your dad may have legal protection provided he can prove the genuinity of the transaction. However, a local lawyer may be in a better position to advise you. If necessary, I can give you references.
Re: property in thailand
The courts in most countries are slow and not very reliable. But it sounds like that is the best option. If you wish, we can identify a law firm/attorney in the koh samui area for him to consult. Maybe the firm would have some additional ideas. But your dad is behind the 8 ball to begin with.
