the extent of my liability

i own a shop and last week i asked one of the cashiers to clean up some olive oil that had been knocked over in one of the aisles. anyway she sliped on it in and injured her self (well she claims to have). i recived a letter from her solicitor claiming i gave her no protective footwear, no training to clean up such spills and i did not warn her of such health and safety hazards. plase could you give me some advice on the extent of my possable liability as i am representing myself

There is no strict liability for this kind of accident and it is probable that you will only be liable if you have breached health and safety regulations or acted as a reasonable person would consider unreasonable as an employer in your particular business.

If you carry insurance for this sort of claim you should simply pass the letter over to your insurers who would deal with it on your behalf. if this is not the case and you are obliged to deal with matters your self we will be pleased to assist but will certainly require further information.
