Legal Question in Employment Law in United Kingdom

If I ask for a reference (letter of recommendation) from a previous employer, are they obliged to give me one?

Am I legally allowed to see it before it gets sent to a new occupation, or only after it has been sent?

If I don't like the reference, am I allowed to refuse for it to be sent?

Is it legal for a previous employer to send a "bad" reference?

An employer is not bound to give a reference, but if they do decide to give one, then it has to be accurate and in good faith. They cannot simply give you a bad reference because they are not happy that you have found a new job, or something like that.

The reference has to be accurate, so, obviously, if you did something unacceptable during your previous employment, the employer would be fully within his rights to state that in the reference.
