Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in United Kingdom

Lawyer requesting probate

A relative of mine died recently and left me her entire estate. (I have the deed of probate) She was married but had been estranged for 12 years and had began divorce proceedings. The husband got all the pension (which is fine) but now has a solicitor who keeps writing to me demanding that i send him copies of the will and assetts. (I sent him a load of papers in September, which he lost) Itold him (the lawyer) he should go through the proper channels as i have no interest or obligation to help his nasty client, but his letters are quite adament that I must comply or he will take 'unilateral action'. My understanding is that he wants me to do his work for him. Am I obliged to send the lawyer anything and is there anyone I can talk to about him harrassing me? Thanks so much, I am very depressed by this because I just want to move on and grieve for my relative.

Re: Lawyer requesting probate

If probate has been granted to you in the estate of your friend, her will is a public document which this solicitor can obtain from the probate Registry. You are probably quite correct in that he finds it easier to bully you rather than make the necessary application. You have no obligation to send him anything, and my advice is to advise him that any communication between you has come to an end that you do not intend to respond to any further letters from him. The ' unilateral action ' threatened is just that and from the information you provide there is no possible action he or his client can bring against you.
