Can you retire from the Air Force after 17.5 years of active duty service and then request a medical evalutation board for medical discharge?

If you retire, you cannot later go back and ask for a medical retirement. You would have to go through the PEB process prior to retirement. If your disability is determined to be 30% or greater, then you would be medically retired. If less that 30%, you would not be retired, but rather would be medically separated with severance pay. If you retire (non-medical), you can still go through the VA process for disability payments but the military will not go back and change your retirement to a medical retirement.
