Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in United States Virgin Islands

Slander; Defamation of Character

I am a totally disabled Veteran/Former POW from the Korean War. I was honorably retired from the US Army. On a classmates website, it was posted by him that I was brainwashed and a traitor to my country. He received a reply stating that I was beat up in a bar because of being brainwashed and a traitor. This is totally erroneous. I do not want this published on the web. Do I have any recourse to pursue this? This individual wrote to me personally beforehand and I told him EXACTLY what had happened. So, it's not a case of him not knowing the truth. Please advise.

Re: Slander; Defamation of Character

Deliberate false statements which cause economic loss or emotional pain are actionable as slander [spoken] or libel [written]. They may also be an invasion of privacy or the intentional infliction of emotional distress. If they fall in any of these catagories a successful lawsuit can stop the propagation of these statements and provide monetary relif as well. Consult a personal injury attorney in your town. Your Bar Association will provide referrals if you don't know any. Initial consultations/case evaluations are usually done at no cost - ask first.
