Legal Question in Banking Law in Utah

Four year old bad check

On 11/17/05 a law office called & told me that I have a bounced check & they need to collect about $750 from me. The check was written on 8/29/01 for $209 to a bookstore & the remaining $500 is for legal fees. They say that in 2001/2002 they sent letters, made phone calls and reported it to the credit agencies.

My bank did find that I did have a bounced check around that time. I guess I just never noticed it. I never recieved notice about it in the mail (I did move around that time but all of my mail forwarded. And are they supposed to send a notice by certified mail?) or a phone call, and it has never appeared on my credit.

I have asked this law office to send me a copy of the check but they refuse to do so unless I show that I am willing to make a payment.

My question is what is my responsibility? I know I should pay the original amount of the check & some fees. But paying an extra $500 to $600 seems high to me. Am I responsible for the legal fees & everything too? Especially when this was over four years ago & I've never heard anything about it. I was also wondering if there is a statute of limitations on bad checks in Utah? Any help or advice you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you
