Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Utah

jail time

my husband and I plan on doing a chapter 7 in a month or so. I have a couple of judgements for some hospital bills and doctor bills.

I was told by my niece that when I go to court to answer why these were not paid, that they could put me in jail. Is this true?

We aare looking for a bankruptcy attorney who can work with us on a monthly payment.

Re: jail time

Bankruptcy court does not send people to jail. You go to jail for criminal offenses, not for civil offenses (not paying bills). If you are contemplating bankruptcy the first thing to do is go talk to Consumer Credit Counseling or some other non-profit credit counselors. IF there is a way to avoid bankruptcy they can help. If not, the excercise to gather your bills for CCC will aid your attorney. There are a lot of bankruptcy lawyers; call around to some in your area. You may want to talk to the Utah Bar Association, who can provide a referral to an attorney in your area.
