Claim against insurance co. for vehicle left for 2 years

About two years ago a person left a vehicle with us for repair. We were never able to contact them. we called and sent letters to the registered owner and lienholder and received no response. We ran the VIN to see if it was stolen and it never came up as stolen. We finally were called by the insurance co. they sent the police to run the VIN which now showed stolen and it was impounded. Do we have any claim against the insurance co. for any charges, we have kept the unit in good shape with the battery charged and everything in good running condition, plus kept it in a secure area.

YOu could have given notice that unless the vehicle was claimed and all storage and repair charges are paid that you would sell the vehicle. The owner and lien holder then must pick up and pay the charges or you can sell it, a retain the proceeds from the sale. However, since you released the vehicle, I doubt that there is much you can do, except file suit against the owner for the amount of the repairs and storage under the theory that you provided a needed benefit to the owner. The insurance company has no liabitity to you, only the owner.
