Legal Question in Business Law in Utah

Defamation

My boss told 2 of my co-workers that I had been involved in some unethical behavior at work. He didn't discuss this with me, his boss, or HR. His allegations are untrue and I would expect to be fired immediately if they were true. After this information made it to me through the grapevine I called my boss to find out what was going on. I asked him for the specifics so that I could clear my name. He told me it wasn't a big deal, he no longer had ''proof'' of my indescretions, and I should just drop it.

Now I have no way to restore my reputation.

Is the company liable along with my boss?

What can I do?

Re: Defamation

Your boss is guilty of slander, and can be held liable for the consequences and damage to your reputation. The problem in these kind of cases is determing damages, and they are fairly difficult to prove in court. You also know that if you pursue this that you would probably be terminated.

At a minimum your boss should notify everyone of the truth and attempt to clear your name.
