Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Utah

renters rights

We have had several things wrong with our apartment, cupboards fall off hinges, drawers fall out. Our Refridgerator is moist and spoils food. Our front door does not shut right, and our oven works improperly. We have had maintenance out many times. I'm tired of calling every other day to fix the problems. The worst is our oven. You have to put it on broil for the baking element to come on and visa versa. We have had them out a couple times for the oven and door, both are not fixed, both they keep telling us there is nothing wrong. What our our rights to have them move us to a newly remodeled apartment or replace the broken oven and broken door???

Re: renters rights

A landlord is required to make sure that the unit is habitable - which means that there cannot be conditions which make living in the unit unsafe. Other complaints are best addressed by writing a letter describing the problem and emphasising any issues of safety; whether not repairing the problem will make it worse or more expensive later on; strongly emphasis the security issues with the front door (landlord could be liable if you were burgled). Check your lease for details regarding repairs. You may also seek mediation between you and the landlord. Finally, call the local building authority to report the problem - and the landlord.
