I am making a DVD of old family photos, to be given as gifts to the family. Can I use music from a CD that I purchased, on the DVD project?

Technically, passing out free DVD's to family is "distribution" and violates (c) law.
But if the DVD's are truly GIFTS, and the number is small (<10) I would not worry about being sued for infringement.
