Legal Question in Consumer Law in Utah

car dealers and safety inspections

I bought a car from a dealer and I now have noticed that it dosen't have brake lights and the seat belts don't work. Aren't car dealers required to pass the state safety test before selling the car? They are registering the car and giving us plates for it. Also the car quit running one day after we bought it. Is there anything the dealer should do to fix our problem?

Re: car dealers and safety inspections

The car must pass an inspection before it can be licensed, so the dealer must provide a sticker. Return the car to the dealer with your complaints. If the dealer is ethical he will repair the car or refund your money. If he is unwilling to repair the car, then report him to the Utah Attorney General's Consumer Affairs office and the Better Business Bureau. You may also have to file suit against the dealer. You should also get an opinion of a mechanic (not the dealer's) as to what the car needs and the cost of repair as soon as possible.
