Legal Question in Consumer Law in Utah
Lease on a storage unit
I signed a month-to-month contract
with a storage unit and paid 3 months
in advance. I put a friend's car and my
mattress in the unit before going
active duty in the military.
After 2 and a half months, I returned
to the storage unit to retrieve my
mattress. At that time, I requested
that my storage unit lease be
suspended when the month was over
(leaving enough time for my friend to
retrieve his car).
2 months later, my friend contacted
me to say that the storage unit
contacted him, insisting that I owed
them money. I called the storage unit
and they said that the car hadn't been
removed yet. They assured me that if
I paid the $350 bill, the car would be
removed and auctioned off if my friend
didn't retrieve it, the storage unit
would no longer be in my name, and
my contract would end. I paid the bill.
It is now 2 months later, and I just
received a bill for $250 for the past
two months. They said that I owe the
storage fee for the past two months
considering that my friend just picked
the car up a month ago.
Are they allowed to charge me for
these past 2 months after I was
promised that my lease would be
terminated? What can I do?

Re: Lease on a storage unit
Refuse to pay and if they sue go to small claims court - or sue in small claims court to have the debt eradicated. What about having your 'friend' pay the bill?
