We had to fire our contractor that we hired to remodle our home. We paid him $15,000 deposit and fired him a month later for non performance. He promised our money back but now we can't find him

You can still sue and get judgment, and continue to search for him. There are ways to find him which attorneys and other professionals have access to find him.
