Legal Question in Consumer Law in Utah

Phone soliciting sales

I received a phone call from a man who said he was from the federal government and that I was one of the people selected to receive a Federal Grant of at least $8,000 due to some information they had. The man later told me that there was a $250.00 charge for the program and their assistance. He tape recorded me talking to him. He gave me a phone number to call 3 days before Dec. 7 if I wished to cancel. I tried calling back a number of times to cancel and finally when I did get someone she said that it was too late to cancel. They said something about a 3 day right of recision policy. They said the company was out of St. George Utah. I never heard of such a thing. They have not even sent the book out yet. They said at the beginning of January they would send it. (I finally got through to talk to them I think it was the 4th day after the so-called man from the federal government originally called me. He wanted my checking account number to debit my checking account eary in January. I just read something in the paper about these type of calls. Can't a consumer change their mind about an unsolicited offer if they feel they were initially misled and haven't received anything from a company yet? Thank you.

Re: Phone soliciting sales

You have probably been duped, and have left yourself open to identity theft. Call the Utah Attorney General Dept of Consumer Affairs. Also notify your bank and try to stop payment - if it is not too late. NEVER give your banking information over the phone unless you are 100% certain of the people you are dealing with - NEVER NEVER NEVER.
