Legal Question in Consumer Law in Utah

Work at home business fraud

I responded to an ad for a work at home business, which was searching for people HUD owes money to and requiring to be paid 20%-30% of amount owed and that is how one makes money. I paid $129 up front for this, just to have gotten 4 forms one uses for this job. On HUD website it warns of tracers requesting a percentage and that one does not have to pay them. After a little more investigation I realised this is a fraudulent business. Before paying, I was assured that I would get my money back after 90 days if I was not satisfied. But with the forms and instructions came a ''90 day limited guarantee'' that states that I won't get my money back unless I work the program and don't have any luck getting any money. Then I found a couple of articles telling people to watch out for this kind of bogus business. I went to the court house to sue this company, but I was told that I can't sue out of state, that I would have to go to Utah to sue. I can't believe there is no recourse for me short of going to Utah. There must be a way for me to get my refund. It is not right for scoundrels such as these to get away with this kind of thing.

Re: Work at home business fraud

Your recourse is in Utah if the Seller's primary place of business is here, since this is where the enforcement must occur. You can file suit here in small claims for amounts under $5000. You can also notify the Utah Attorney General Consumer Fraud.
