Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

avoiding identity theft

If I were to go to court and legally change my name, perhaps change 1 letter in it, and continue using my ''Old'' name, (the original spelling) for credit and checking functions, and later someone Stold my identity and I got stuck with thousands of dollars worth of liability from credit cards and bank functions, could I deny the liability on the grounds that my Legal name is NOT the name on the credit cards and Bank accounts and ect...? And my TRUE identity is NOT the one that was stolen...?

Re: avoiding identity theft

You cannot arbitrarily change your name, you have to give the court a good reason. If you suffer identity theft, you are usually protected for credit card purchases by Federal Law. Other purchases you may have to prove that you were not the purchaser.
