Bank collection after 6 1/2 years?

I had a savings/checking account that was closed by the bank Aug 2001 with a balance owed. The weekend of January 25th 2008 I recieved a letter from a collection agency for the balance owed on the account. In the 6 & 1/2 years I never received a notice from the bank. Do I have any rights under the 4 years of statute to limitations on this? Any suggestions?

Very few defenses - you may want to assert laches.
