Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

I had to break a rental contract due the fact that me and my wife separated. The landlord just served us papers stating that he is suing us for over 10,000 dollars in damages and breaking rental contract. He is accusing us of having a pet in the house that caused damages, which we never did. In the time we spent there we had a couple mishaps which had stained the carpet. The landlord had a cleaning crew come in and clean the carpets. Which I reimbursed him for the charges with a check. He also has stated that he wants us to repair the nailholes in the walls and paint the entire house. I told him that if he wanted to take care of the repairs and tell me the amount i would reimburse him, but he has chosen to take me to court for what i feel is an outrageous amount. What are my options?

Appear in court and be prepared to justify what reasonable expenses are for the damage, and for the balance of your lease agreement.
