Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah

Car Collections and Credit Reporting

We co-signed for a car with our son, and bought one ourselves. Our son vol. repo'd his car, and they told us unless we pd his car in full they wld repo our car and did. They are two separte accounts and paperwork. They did take both cars, and then sold the account to a credit union for collections. Now both the car agency and the collection agency show neg. on our credit reports. Is this legal to show both as open collections and can they pick up both cars when they were separate contracts? We spoke to the owner of the dealership, who said he could see his old collections person saying that but we should have come directly to him. But that is a little to late since they have sold them at auction and will not give us the paper work for what they sold for and also what charge they have posted to our account. We are trying to purchase our first home and this is our only snag. What should we do?

Re: Car Collections and Credit Reporting

Without seeing the contracts there is no way to tell for sure. If the contracts did not reference each other, the repo and subsequent sale and credit report, may all be improper. Contact an attorney for a review.
