Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Utah
Collection agency and Medicaid
My wife was covered by Medicaid in Utah in May 2004. She had medical expenses as she was pregnant. In July, we moved to France for 7 months. We forwarded our mail to her parents. In December, we had the surprise to receive a medical bill. We provided the information that my wife was covered with Medicaid and didn't hear anything. A few months ago, my wife got a phone call from a collection agency requesting a payment. She told them again that she had Medicaid. They said they will try to bill them. However, a few weeks ago, they call again saying that Medicaid declined it and that we had to pay. I am sure the billing department made a mistake somehow. Why should I pay and what can I do? Thank you.

Re: Collection agency and Medicaid
Contact the medical provider and see what can be done to resurrect the Medicaid claim. When claims are not timely filed sometimes the claims are denied for being "stale." If you can't get Medicaid to pay, then you will have to pay yourself - or will have to take advantage of whatever charitable write-downs the hospital will do - depending on your financial situation.
