How long from the time the debt has occurred can a collection agency collect on the debt. In other words, if collector is trying to coleect on a debt more than 6 years old, is there any limitations?

The answer depends on the state in which you live. Each state establishes Statutes of Limitations which govern the length of time during which an action may be brought. It also depends on whether a judgment has been issued on the debt. For many states a debt can be collected on for up to ten years. If a judgment has been granted, the judgment can be renewed for additional years.

If the debt is legitimate, but just very old, you can often negotiate for a substantial discount. By now the original creditor has probably written off the debt and sold the note to another collection company for a fraction of the original value. You may wish to offer 50$ of the debt or some other low figure on the condition that the agency does not file any kind of negative report and/or removes any negative report which they may have filed.
